Gemstone Information - Hematite Hematite is an iron oxide, metallic, opaque stone found in iron-mining areas. The name hematite in Greek means 'blood'. The synonym bloodstone is derived from the fact that, when cut the hematite pieces, the saw coolant becomes colored red.
